Born in 1944 in Ålesund, Ørnulf Opdahl is one of Norway’s most distinguished contemporary artists, renowned for his powerful interpretations of the country’s dramatic western landscape. His work fuses realism with abstraction to evoke the raw, atmospheric beauty of nature—capturing the play of light, weather and emotion that define the coastal terrain of his homeland. Often described as a great romantic of Norwegian art, Opdahl revitalized the landscape painting tradition, following in the footsteps of Old Masters such as J.C. Dahl and Peder Balke.  

Opdahl’s practice combines painting, etching and lithography, with works that reveal both the majesty and solitude of Norway’s rugged environment. From his studio on the island of Godøy, he continues to draw inspiration from the ever-changing moods of the surrounding sea and mountains. Over the decades, his work has been exhibited widely in Norway and internationally and is represented in most major Norwegian public art collections. 

In addition to his artistic career, Opdahl served as Professor at the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo, shaping a new generation of Norwegian artists through his teaching and mentorship.
