Amanda Johnson
Winemaker | Spy Valley Wines
New Zealand
Amanda Johnson is the managing director of the acclaimed Spy Valley Wines. Founded in 1993 by Amanda’s parents, Jan and Bryan Johnson, the company’s 445 acres of vineyards lie in the Waihopai Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand, just down the road from a government intelligence base. It was not until 2000, however, that the Johnsons released their first vintage under the brand name Spy Valley, coined by Amanda. Today, the winery crafts eight varietals but is renowned for its world-famous sauvignon blanc.
To become a part of this legacy has always been Amanda’s dream. After completing her bachelor of commerce degree at the University of Otago, she embarked on her OE (overseas experience), as is the Kiwi tradition, and traveled extensively throughout the US and the Caribbean. When she returned to New Zealand, she made her dream a reality and joined the family business, bringing her expertise in marketing and human relations. Now also a member of the New Zealand Women in Wine initiative, Amanda leads Spy Valley in its commitment to sustainable wine growing and the preservation of its land for future generations.
