John Weaver Fitzpatrick

John W. Fitzpatrick is an ornithologist, conservationist and academic who served from 1995 to 2021 as the Louis Agassiz Fuertes Director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology—a Viking Scientific Partner. Over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, he has made groundbreaking contributions to the study of bird ecology, behavior and conservation, while inspiring generations of birders and scientists worldwide.  

As Director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Mr. Fitzpatrick expanded its global influence in bird research, technology and conservation advocacy. Ornithologists from the Lab regularly sail on board Viking’s expedition vessels, conducting post-doctoral research on innovative observation methods and engaging with guests.  

Mr. Fitzpatrick holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard University and a PhD in biological sciences from Princeton University. Co-author of the authoritative Birds of South America series, his work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He is renowned for his leadership in large-scale citizen science initiatives—most notably the eBird program, which has become the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science project.
