Álvaro Martinho is the Director of Viticulture at Quinta das Carvalhas, one of the Douro Valley’s most prestigious and historic wine estates. Overseeing hundreds of hectares of terraced vineyards, Mr. Martinho combines scientific expertise with deep respect for traditional winegrowing methods, ensuring the continued excellence of the estate’s world-renowned port and red wines.  

Born and raised in the Douro region, Mr. Martinho studied Agricultural Engineering and Viticulture before joining the wine industry full-time. At Quinta das Carvalhas—often called the “jewel” of Real Companhia Velha—he manages the cultivation of numerous native grape varieties across varying altitudes and terrains, adapting to the valley’s unique terroir. His approach blends heritage practices with modern viticultural techniques, optimizing grape quality while preserving the estate’s biodiversity.  

Mr. Martinho is a frequent speaker on Douro viticulture and has been featured internationally in wine media, including a 2021 feature in The Portugal News.
