I have two grandsons, one 4 and one 8. They both enjoyed the story very much. We did not realize that crows were so intelligent. Now the boys caw to the crows when thry are around. I also gave this book as a gift to a 4th grade science teacher which she has used in her classroom as the information and references in the back of the book are outstanding.

Syd is a remarkable creature. He tells a story of the interaction of man and the animal kingdom. The story itself is precious and the illustrations are so life like. The story line can be understood by just looking at the pictures. A joy for children to be able to know the story through the illustrations. This book fills the bill for enjoyment.

There's a lot of not great kids books out there. This is not one of them. Which is to say it's a grand book. It's a great balance of nostalgia and wonder. Great illustrations abound in this book as well. There's even lesson plans in the back! Check it out - it has a little of everything.

There are blurry memories from our childhood, and then there are significant ones - ones that we remember in explicit detail. I'm talking about the kind of things that shaped us as a child and maybe even left a big enough wake for us to follow it into adulthood.

Taken at face value or out of context, it may be hard to explain the importance of what otherwise would seem like any other nonevent in someone's life.

Syd, The Crow would be a great read on its own, but I identify with the story it tells - not because I have first hand experienced an intelligent and friendly crow electing itself as a new family member for a few months - but rather the breezy, fleeting experiences of youth.

Between the introduction of Janetzke family and their time-honored traditions (learning how they celebrate their holidays; Kolendy, a traditional Polish Christmas carol, for example), this is a story that feels very lived-in and has familiar, likable characters.

By the time Syd shows up and makes himself a surrogate member of the Janetzke family, we feel the excitement the children share as he befriends the family dog, brings them shiny gifts (everything from a piece of foil to a watch) and makes a surprise appearance at their elementary school.

The lush illustrations put the reader right into this fun little world and really add to the text.

Syd has lessons about history, culture and nature as well. It would be a cliché to say this is a great book for children of all ages, but I'll say it anyway.

The book is a eye catcher with its wonderful illustrations. We enjoyed the story.
While reading to the granddaughter, the full page illustrations kept her wondering page after page.
The part we enjoyed was the shiny objects Syd left in the nest...we come back to that page a lot!
It makes us think about our experiences with wild animals.

This book is great, both my kids loved it in different ways. The older one liked the story and the new things he learned from reading it, and the little one absolutely loved the pictures. Great nostalgic book for adults as well, definitely worth it!
